Many Chester residents will remember the tight-knit neighbourhood of Newtown with its two-up two-down houses together with shops and pubs on almost every street corner and Christ Church at the centre of it all.

Originally designed as an overspill from the rapidly growing city, with the coming of the railway, this New Town quickly became home to the hundreds of workers and their families who crowded into the terraced houses. Although life was hard, many remember with great affection a wonderful community where everyone knew everyone else and shared bad times as well as good times with lots of laughter and occasional tears.

Elaine Pierce-Jones from Chester’s History and Heritage Museum said: “We have hundreds of photographs of this area – and the people who lived there – but would love to increase our collection and would really welcome any photographs which could be added – all images would be carefully scanned and returned.”
