On Sunday January 10 the Linenhall car park in Chester will lower the barrier and no longer offer shoppers the chance of free parking after 2pm or all day on Sunday.

Work will then begin on a massive 550-bed student complex at the site.

In 2014 Chronicle reader Roger Vincent sent us some pictures of the construction of the original Linenhall Street car and coach park.

Back in 1962/63 when the car park was being built, Roger was working as an engineer responsible for the project and has many memories from the time.

Roger, who later became an engineer for the former Chester City Council, also sent us a cutting from The Chester Chronicle which reported on the building of the car park.

He said: “One of the photos shows the start of excavations with the Guildhall in the background and another was taken in the opposite direction looking towards the former Royal Infirmary and nurses home - all prior to the construction of the inner ring road.

“Then there is one that shows some unintended backfilling behind the new retaining wall.

“The lorry driver survived the incident but I don't know if he kept his job as it was a new vehicle !

“The columns were designed to support 80 coaches and no one envisaged at the time that they would one day support the Crowne Plaza hotel!”
