A much loved Malpas couple have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Bill and Joan Rich were married on December 27, 1954 at St John’s Church, Threapwood.

Joan, of Threapwood was a barmaid at The Wyvern public house in Church Street, Malpas, where they first met.

Bill was born in High Street, Malpas, and has lived all his life in the parish, being a boy scout and a cadet, before starting work as a plumber and Malpas fire fighter.

They first lived in Sunnyside, Malpas, moving to their current address in Springfield Avenue 57 years ago.

They ran their first bingo for Malpas scouts 46 years ago and have continued running fundraising events since then raising an estimated £80,000- £90,000 between them.

In 2000 the couple were awarded the Star Citizen awards by Chester City Council and Joan was once runner up for Woman of the Year.

The couple have four sons, Terry, Les, Peter and Dennis. Terry and Dennis were in Malpas Fire service, while Les is a local plumber.

They have nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
