Penguins at Chester Zoo are made up with the opening of a new restaurant at Cheshire Oaks on Friday (June 13).

The Humboldt penguins in the zoo’s pool need not get into a flap over who’s preparing their favourite dish as iconic Japanese restaurant group YO! Sushi is pledging its support for the little fish lovers.

The move, marking the start of an ongoing partnership with the UK’s largest zoo, coincides with the company opening its second restaurant in Cheshire due to popular demand.

The new 2,300sq ft, 74 seat eaterie has been designed especially for the Cheshire Oaks shopping centre.

Whilst sushi isn’t on the menu for the penguins, they’ll be enjoying a feast of sustainably sourced fish, just like diners at the restaurants.

Chester Zoo’s corporate and events fundraiser Michelle Duma commented: “We’re thrilled to have YO! Sushi as a corporate supporter of our Humboldt Penguins.

“Just like us they only serve up fish from sustainable sources and I’m sure they’ll be a welcome addition to the local community”

Serving up Japanese inspired food in style on the restaurant’s ‘kaiten’ conveyor belt, diners at the Oaks will be able to choose from 80 delicious hot and cold dishes including soups, rice or noodle-based dishes, salads, tempura and desserts.

Customers who may not be familiar with traditional sushi dishes can enjoy a wide variety of 30 hot classics including best-selling chicken Katsu curry, pumpkin Korroke and Yakisoba noodles.

Katie Crossfield, marketing manager at YO! Sushi added: “We’re thrilled that YO! Sushi is the first official restaurant partner Chester Zoo has ever had and delighted to be supporting the colony of over 35 penguins that live there.

“YO! Sushi has proved popular in Chester and we’re very happy to be opening our second restaurant in the local area due to the fantastic demand and support we’ve received from the local community.”
