Chester's dramatic afternoon thunderstorm caused a few raised eyebrows when it hit the city just after lunch.

Thunder, hailstones and sheets of violent rain pelted the city and surrounding areas for about 10 minutes , with a force so strong it affected the electrics in the basement of Chester's Queen Hotel on City Road.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service watch manager Chris Rodaway told The Chronicle: "The crews had to go and sort out the electricity down in the hotel's basement which was affected by the severe rain but it does not appear to be a serious problem."
