As a special commemoration to mark the 100-year anniversary, a few of the KS2 children from Rivacre Valley Primary School went to Overpool Cemetery to lay poppies on the gravestones of First World War soldiers.

The children are studying the war as their topic this half term in school and the visit gave them a real insight into the sacrifice made by young men in the Great War. They were very proud to honour the soldiers.

The commemoration was organised by Faye Clarke, who is a regular volunteer in the school library, her mother Julia Clarke and Liz Stonely.

Later on, at 11am, everyone gathered in assembly to remember those who took part in the First World War and other conflicts since then.
