A manslaughter investigation has been launched after a man died two weeks after being attacked in Ellesmere Port.

Lukasz Sawinski died in the early hours of what would have been his 31st birthday (Tuesday May 12) at Liverpool's Walton Centre from head injuries after he was attacked on Woodfield Road at around 1.15am on April 27.

He and his friend had been approached by a group of four men and, after a brief conversation, an altercation took place and Mr Sawinski was knocked to the floor, sustaining a head injury.

However, he did not seek medical help until April 30, when he began feeling ill, and shortly afterwards, Mr Sawinski was taken to the Walton Centre in a critical condition, with his father Marek flying over from Poland to be by his bedside.

Peter Taylor, 30, of Eton Road, Ellesmere Port, was later charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent.

He appeared at Chester Magistrates’ court on May 7 and has been remanded in custody to appear at Liverpool crown court on May 19.

Three other men, aged 27, 35 and 36, and one woman, aged 25, were also arrested in relation to the incident and released on police bail.

Before his attack, Mr Sawinski was due to fly back home to Poland to be with his goddaughter for her First Holy Communion. His father, who had previously appealed for information to find his son's attackers said recently:

"We are devastated - the rest of the family wish they could be here with him. They are calling every five minutes but it’s very hard. They wait for good news, but there isn’t any."
