Helsby Bowling Club is giving schoolchildren the chance to try their hand at indoor short mat bowling, thanks to new equipment bought with support from Weaver Vale Housing Trust and Cheshire West and Chester Council.

The club has invested in new indoor mats, scoreboards and jacks to give 30 year six pupils from Helsby Hillside Primary School the chance to have a go at bowling indoors once a week.

The sessions will continue during the winter months until March 2014, when they will revert outdoors at the Helsby Community Bowling Club.

The equipment was purchased with a £500 grant from the trust’s Community Assistance Fund and further funding from CWaC.

St Paul’s Church, Helsby, is offering its church hall and storage facilities for the bowling equipment free of charge.

John Clements, from Helsby Bowling Club, said: “The indoor bowling will benefit the children and hopefully inspire the next generation of Crown Green Bowlers.

“Last year, on many occasions due to bad weather, sessions had to be cancelled. Now they are all pleased, knowing they can go indoors in bad weather conditions and bowl all year round.”

Stacey Green, tenant engagement coordinator for the trust, said:

“Helsby Bowling Club is doing fantastic work to engage with youngsters in the local community and encouraging them to take up a really healthy and social activity that is different to other sports learnt in school.

“It is a great example of the type of organisation we are keen to keen to work with and lend our support to through the Community Assistance Fund.”

Beginning early December, 10-18-year-olds from the area are invited to take advantage of bowling coaching on Saturday mornings from 10.30am to 1.30pm at St Paul’s Church Hall, Vicarage Lane. For more information, contact John Clements on 01928 722524.
