Pupils of Overleigh St Mary’s CE Primary School celebrate World Environment Day

SOMETHING fishy has been going on at a Chester school.

Pupils of Overleigh St Mary’s CE Primary School in Handbridge swapped school uniform for sea creature costumes to celebrate World Environment Day.

The Overleigh Green Team chose the theme Saving our Oceans: the Big Overleigh Fish Fight for the charity fundraising day where each class filled a jar with coins to support the work of The Shark Trust and Earthwatch.

The youngsters were invited to wear something fishy to promote marine conservation and spent the day studying aspects of over-fishing, pollution of the seas, habitat destruction and food chains.

The school’s Cosmic Canteen offered a sustainable fish menu for lunch on the day.

The winners of the best costume in each year group were then invited to take their teddy bear to dive with the sharks at the Blue Planet Aquarium in Ellesmere Port.

Eco-cordinator Nicky Bolton said: “The children have been so excited by the project, I have ended up signing up to take part in an Earthwatch Shark Conservation project in Belize in January next year and I am going to swim in the Great North Swim later this month.”
