WHEN you get rid of waste make sure you do it legally if you want to avoid prosecution.
Fly-tipping is the “illegal deposit of any waste onto land or a highway that has no waste licence to accept it,” according to the website www.keepbritaintidy.co.uk . This includes tipping waste such as mattresses, electrical items, a bin bag full of rubbish, garden waste or a truckload of construction waste onto a street or open space.
Fly-tipping can impact on your local environment and can attract anti-social behaviour affecting your quality of life.
Streetscene are urging residents to exercise caution if they ask or employ someone to take their waste away, as it is the householder who is liable for prosecution if the waste is then fly-tipped.
If you ask someone to dispose of your waste:
Check the person is authorised – ask them to produce their waste carriers license. If they can't do this do not give them your waste – if in doubt contact the Environment Agency on 0845 603 3113 or log on to www.environment-agency.gov.uk .
Always ensure you get a receipt for waste removed and take full details of the vehicle/company removing the waste such as the vehicle registration number.
