Music Spotlight: Homecoming for Crewe lad as London band The Good Suns play The Box

London-based indie-pop outfit The Good Suns round off their first-ever UK tour with a debut at The Box this Friday.

Fresh from supporting rising compatriots of the capital, Spector, the four-piece have hit the road to unleash their vivacious, guitar-shredding pop wonders on unsuspecting audiences in the North.

However it’s familiar territory for bassist Stew Capper – one time member of defunct local indie band The Varlets.

Juggling work with music and freelance photography for NME down in the Smoke, the 22-year-old is set for a special homecoming.

“We’re in the last leg of the tour and what a way to end it for me,” he said.

“This is the first time the rest of the guys have been up this way, we recently played Blackpool which was an awesome show and an experience for them.

“It’s good to be playing new places and I’m sure they will love The Box.”

Alongside Sgt Wolfbanger, Bleached Wail and The Deadheads, The Varlets were among the first raft of bands to play Crewe’s alternative music venue back in 2008.

“We were just four mates having a laugh,” continued Capper.

“I think we all knew it wasn’t really going anywhere because we were just playing music that wasn’t current and with the Britpop thing, it was almost nostalgia.

“But it’s great to be going back, I’ve always loved the venue.

“Other than The M Club at the time which didn’t really give bands like us a shot, The Box was a huge deal for us and I’m sure it still is for the local bands around now.

“It’s a big stage with a big sound and it was the place you wanted to play.”

Judging by positive reviews and extensive coverage, it looks like The Good Suns are going somewhere.

Together with Bobby McBrierty (lead singer/rhythm guitarist), Adam Smith (guitar) and Greg Sullivan (drums), Capper is excited about the future.

“I think we’ve moved on a lot as a live band over the last few months,” he added.

“There is harmonic pop in there but also a bit more grunge so it’s a real mix of styles.”

Stoke band Moral Panics provide support along with Crewe’s Not Penny’s Boat and Neon Parade.

Doors open at 7.30pm, tickets are £5.

House/dance/chart clubnight, Fresh, follows the gig from 11pm for over-18s only.
