HULL Truck Theatre are to visit Crewe Lyceum Theatre with Richard Cameron’s The Glee Club from November 7-9 – reviving a play premiered by Hull Truck’s own founder Mike Bradwell at The Bush Theatre in 2002.
The play follows the story of the Edlington Colliery’s Glee Club who spend their evenings away from the pit getting together to sing. But just ahead of the gala performance of 1962, the South Yorkshire group face problems.
To prepare for the play, director Tessa Walker, who comes to Hull Truck from the National Theatre of Scotland where she was literary associate, has been in contact with former miner Frank Arrowsmith.
She said: “Speaking to him really brought the play alive for me in such a brilliant way.”
The play, which is as insightful and poignant as it is hilarious, features a cast of six male actors who have worked with music director Phil Bateman to create their close-harmony singing.
