Jesus Christ Superstar ready to open at Lyceum Theatre in Crewe

ANDREW Lloyd Webber’s award-winning musical Jesus Christ Superstar opens at the Lyceum Theatre next week.

The Crewe Amateur Musicals Society present their version of the 1971 Broadway hit.

Lloyd-Webber provided the music and Tim Rice the lyrics in a show that attracted anger from some religious groups who felt too much sympathy was shown for Judas and too much criticism of Jesus.

The musical tells the story of the last seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth as seen through the eyes of the conflicted and tragic Judas Iscariot, a disciple who had become disillusioned with Jesus, his rise to popularity as a ‘king’, and claims to divinity.

As with so many Lloyd-Webber works, the show produced some iconic songs, including Superstar and I Don’t Know How to Love Him.

CAMS publicity officer Heather Taylor said: “Rehearsals are still going exceptionally well, and the cast are extremely excited for the show to start!”

Jesus Christ Superstar runs at the Lyceum from Monday until Saturday, March 19.

Tickets are on sale now, priced £10-£14. To book, phone the box office on 01270 537333 or visit www.lyceumtheatre.net.
