Playwright Jonathan harvey premieres Canary at Liverpool Everyman

AWARD-winning writer Jonathan Harvey makes a triumphant return to the Liverpool stage with major new play Canary.

BAFTA award-winning director Hettie Macdonald also returns to the Everyman Theatre to be reunited with Jonathan, having directed both the original stage and film versions of his award-winning play Beautiful Thing.

Laced with magical touches and pitch black humour, Canary is an unflinching story about family, honesty and forbidden love spanning four decades and can be seen from tomorrow until Saturday, May 15.

In 1960s Liverpool two lovers hide in the closet, then go their separate ways.Š While pits close and dole queues grow, a couple of runaways find ‘Heaven’ in 1980s London.Š

Flash forward to today and the paparazzi are chasing a love story that could tear a family apart.

Spanning three generations, Canary is a tragic, comic and surreal exploration of the changing attitudes towards homosexuality, set against the changing backdrop of modern Britain from 1960s to the present.
