SWETTENHAM’S Clonter Opera Theatre turns to folk’s finest on Saturday. THE HISTORY BOYS (Regent Theatre, Hanley, Mar 22-26)

ALAN Bennett’s classic modern drama is the story of a boisterous bunch of bright, funny, sixth-formers at a Yorkshire grammar school attempting to gain entrance to Oxford or Cambridge whilst evading the distractions of sport and sex. When the headmaster brings a bright junior master to coach the boys, their allegiances to endearing ‘life teacher’ Hector are divided. MONTHS of rehearsals come to fruition in the latest Crewe Amateur Musicals Society production. It tells the story of Dolly, a matchmaker and self confessed “meddler and arranger” and her attempts to sort out various romantic situations along with her own romantic aspirations.
