Review: Arden of Faversham at Clwyd Theatr Cymru, Mold

I didn’t really know what to expect from Arden Of Faversham having never read, seen or heard anything about the storyline or characters.

All I knew was that it was written by an anonymous contemporary of Shakespeare and promised to be bloody.

Well, bloody it was, but also highly comical and extremely watchable.

The story follows Alice, wife of the rich Arden, and her affair with her lover, Mosby.

The pair plot to kill Arden and enlist the help of a number of hapless servants, criminals and disgruntled farmers to do it.

However, despite numerous attempts on his life, Arden just will not be killed, until the end that is and then everyone must face the music...

The characters were well cast, with some of the best scenes coming from murderous duo Black Will and Shakebag, played by Brendan Charleston and Dyfrig Morris, whose enormous stature meant it didn't require much to present a pretty intimidating presence on stage.

Steven Meo as put-upon servant Michael was extremely good, but saying that, all the actors were good, not a weak link among them.

The muted set and lighting meant the story and action relied more heavily on the body language of the cast and added to the eerie atmosphere and lawlessness of 16th century England.

I really enjoyed this production, it held my attention and had me recommending it to my friends.

Go and see it if you get the chance.

Arden of Faversham is on at Emlyn Williams Theatre, Clwyd Theatr Cymru, Mold, until March 6. Call the box office on 0845 330 3565 for tickets.
