JONATHAN Ansell, who found fame as lead vocalist in X-Factor runners-up G4, is to star in Whistle Down the Wind at Manchester Opera House.
The touching drama – embodying the innocence of youth – won the hearts of a generation when young Hayley Mills starred opposite Alan Bates in the film version.
Now Ansell hopes he can achieve similar success in Bill Kenwright’s production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical interpretation.
Ansell has enjoyed three years of multi-million-selling success with G4 – but his solo achievements have sent his career into orbit.
In February 2008, his first solo album, Tenor At The Movies, went straight to No 1 in the classical charts, hit Top 10 in the pop album charts, and made him the youngest ever tenor to top the classical charts.
His voice combines the virtuosity of classical training with the power and passion of his interpretation.
He now embarks on his first ever dramatic leading role in a stage musical. And what a role!
The bright-eyed and youthful Swallow discovers a mysterious man hiding in her family’s barn.
When she asks who he is, the first words he utters are ‘Jesus Christ!’
It’s as though her prayers have been answered. While the townspeople hunt for a fugitive on the run from jail, Swallow gathers the town’s children who make a pact to protect their new found saviour from the cruelties of the outside world.
It’s an extraordinary and uplifting tale and features numerous multi-award-winning songs including Boyzone hit No Matter What.
The musical, which is on a nationwide tour, is on at the Opera House from Monday March 22 to Saturday April 3 with matinees on the Thursday and the Saturday (2.30pm).
Tickets are £10.50 to £34. The box office, which charges a booking fee, is 0844 847 2295.
