LEADING lights of Stoke’s indie scene New Education play at The Box in Crewe on Friday.
The outfit have been busy spreading their sound across the UK, supporting the likes of The Holloways, The Twang and Pete Doherty.
Frontman Ryan Dooley writes gritty but upbeat indie anthems, which the band describe as the sound of ‘midlands calling’.
The band have been winning plaudits up and down the country.
NME said: “They are the light at the end of the tunnel for proper British rock ’n’ roll.
“They aim at liberating their listeners with life-affirming melody.”
The band was formed in January 2008 after Ryan and brother Jack’s punkier previous band ended.
Completed by drummer John Bradbury and guitarist David Cartwright they made waves in October with their single Today.
“The way I see it songs should set you free,” said Ryan.
“And a lot of the bands nowadays tie you down. I keep hearing about a mundane existence in every song, especially from bands in our genre. All New Education songs are about breaking out.”
Support comes from fellow Stoke bands The Boothen, Corporation One and The Riots. Doors open at 8pm.
