GERMAN playwright Bertolt Brecht’s stirring drama about the dilemma of how to be good in a cruel and unforgiving world, The Good Soul of Szechuan, can be seen at the Library Theatre in Manchester from October 30 to November 28.
Three gods are on a mission to see if there are any good people left on Earth. They come across Shen Te, a warm-hearted prostitute, who offers them shelter. With what the gods give her as thanks, Shen Te opens a tobacco shop.
Suddenly, everyone starts to take advantage of her good nature. How she can survive and escape the situation which she originally thought would be her escape route into a more benign and happier existence is the urgent problem in this parable for our time.
Poppy Miller, who starred as Terese in Goldplated, the acclaimed Channel 4 drama in 2006 about the hedonistic goings-on among the Cheshire set, heads the 14-strong cast as Shen Te.
Natasha Bain, John Cummins and Olwen May play the three gods.
