ONE of Britain’s most important new writing touring theatre companies, Out of Joint, return to the Library Theatre in Manchester with Dreams of Violence, a hilarious new comedy about a dysfunctional family set against the collapse of the financial world.
Written by Stella Feehily, whose debut play Duck, performed by Out of Joint, toured the Library Theatre in September 2003, and directed by Max Stafford-Clark, Out of Joint’s artistic director, Dreams of Violence enjoyed a successful and critically acclaimed summer run at the prestigious Soho Theatre in London’s West End.
Its visit to Manchester is part of a seven-venue British tour, and features its original cast.
Hildy may be a modern young woman, but she’s not so skilled at the work-life balance.
By day she’s a political activist, leading the City of London’s cleaners in revolt against the bankers.
By night, she has increasingly disturbing, violent dreams about her family – her druggie son; the philandering husband to whom she can’t quite say goodbye; her errant father; and her mother, Shirley, an alcoholic, ageing former pop star who has set up camp in Hildy’s spare room in order to belittle her from close range.
Dreams of Violence can be seen at the Library Theatre from October 20-24. Visit www.librarytheatre.com or ring 0161 236 7110.
