Liverpool’s Bluecoat Display Centre stages exhibition of worldwide jewellery artists

SEVEN jewellery artists have sent their work half-way around the world to be exhibited at the Bluecoat Display Centre in Liverpool.

The Southern Stars: Northern Light exhibition brings together a select group of established and emerging contemporary jewellers from South Australia.

The College Lane gallery approached curator Margaret Hancock, of Jam Factory craft and design centre, Adelaide, after seeing work on display in the V&A’s international arts fair, Collect.

“I’ve chosen jewellers that demonstrate a range of different styles and use a wide range of materials,” said Margaret.

“Most of them have quite a conceptual basis to their work or are really material-focused.”

One of those featured is Sun-Woong Bang, who emigrated to Australia from South Korea in 2001. As part of the collaboration, he has been spending three weeks as the Display Centre’s artist in residence, speaking to local people and drawing inspiration from Liverpool city centre.

“It’s been really fantastic,” he says. “People have been very friendly.”

Southern Stars: Northern Light is at the Bluecoat Display Centre until September 26.
