Young stars of the future take to Liverpool Empire stage for Bugsy Malone

LIVERPOOL Empire is being taken over by more than 130 young people this summer for its annual Stage Experience project.

They will take on all roles in a production of Bugsy Malone, as well as manning the lighting and sound desks.

The two-week scheme ends with four performances of the hit musical open to the public from Thursday to Saturday this eek (August 6-8).

“We’re so excited about it and for two weeks it really brings the theatre to life,” says Natalie Flynn, the Empire’s head of education and community.

“It’s fun for the staff at the Empire, too, because we’re normally a receiving house, so it’s great to have something that’s so hands-on.”

Auditions were held in March and scripts were posted out to those playing the lead roles.

Choreographer Gil Burns has been teaching them their dance routines.

“It’s much more fun than working with adults,” she says.

“They’ve got a lot more attitude, in a good way, they have more energy and excitement.

“I ask them to add their own moves in and work as creatively as we can, given the time restraint.”

Eight technical places have also been allocated, giving the young people an opportunity to try out stage management, lighting and sound.

Local businesses have sponsored 15 free places for young people from low income backgrounds.

“We’ve got people of all walks of life taking part, aged 11 to 21,” says Natalie.

“Most of them are from Liverpool but we have three travelling down from Cumbria, one girl from Leeds and lots from Cheshire, St Helens and Southport.”

The Empire launched its Stage Experience scheme in 2007 with a production of Summer Holiday. Last year’s show was The Wiz, a retelling of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in the context of African American culture.

“In the age of reality TV when we’re used to seeing people achieve instant fame, it’s good to show young people what the industry is really like,” says Natalie.

“Whether they’re playing Bugsy or a member of the chorus, we make sure everyone feels as much a part of the experience as possible.”
