Win tickets to a TV night at the opera

A CLASSIC Italian comic opera is to be showcased in an open-air screening for free in Chester’s Grosvenor Park later this month.

And The Chronicle has exclusive tickets for the event as prizes in a competition.

The Sky Arts channel will be broadcasting L’elisir d’amore (The elixir of love) from 5.30pm on Saturday, August 15, in the park.

L’elisir d’amore is being performed from the Glyndebourne opera house, near Lewes, East Sussex, that evening, and the show will go out live.

The broadcast will be in high definition and will be the climax of the channel’s month-long Glyndebourne season.

L’elisir d’amore is one of the most famous works by Gaetano Donizetti.

It tells the tale of romantic rivalry between the penniless Nemorino and the bumptious Sergeant Belcore for the love of the beautiful, bookish Adina, whose reading of the tale of Tristan and Isolde makes lovesick Nemorino think the wonder-working Dr Dulcamara might have just the potion his heart requires.

Sky Arts’ coverage of Glyndeobourne’s opera performance will be hosted from the festival by Michael Portillo.

John Cassy, channel director for Sky Arts coverage of the event, said: "Glyndebourne is one of the premium opera festivals in the world and we want to offer that experience to as many people as possible."

David Pickard, general director of Glyndebourne, said: "We are very pleased our partnership with Sky Arts has enabled us to be part of this open-air screening of L’elisir d’amore.

"We are committed to broadening the audience for opera and are delighted a Glyndebourne performance will be live in Chester for the first time."
