Review: The Loving Cup at Telford’s Warehouse

THE LOVING CUP/Telford’s Warehouse, Chester, 24/01/09

REVIEW/by Grahame Rhodes

AFTER a most successful 2008 which saw them championed by Mark Lamarr on BBC Radio 2 with airplay and a session, and the release of their second album “Goofer Dust”, the Deeside-based country-rockers The Loving Cup rocked a packed Telford’s Warehouse with an hour of their own tunes and some choice covers.

The band are led by the fine vocals and acoustic guitar of Jarred Livesey, a top frontman, and the twin guitars of Andrew Vickers and Gareth Catterall, with the rhythm section of ‘Thunderfingers’ Whitfield and Neil Roberts in the ‘engine room’ – together they deliver a great blend of classic Americana and southern-flavoured rock, with great guitar work and harmony vocals.

They kicked off with a cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Don’t Do It”, with an almost Black Crowes swagger to it, with their own “Blood On The Sidewalk” being another standout, and a track from the afore-mentioned “Goofer Dust”.

A couple of fine covers were the classic “The Weight”, and a lovely version of Ryan Adams “Rosalie Come And Go” from his “Gold” album of a few years ago – beautifully delivered with the twin guitars to the fore, and Jarred Livesey’s fine voice on top form.

An hour flew by with a much-demanded encore seeing a gritty version of the Neil Young gem “Ohio”, to round off a fine set from a really accomplished band – well worth seeing if you have not caught them yet!

Catch the band next locally at The Railway Hotel, Nantwich, on Friday, January 30.
