Jazz and soul stars on stage

JAZZ fans are being invited to hear two of the brightest young singers on the circuit perform live over the next few days.

Tonight sees Alexander’s in Chester play host to Kate Threlfall in concert.

Manchester-born Threlfall is described as “a soulful singer-songwriter” who incorporates a love of jazz and R&B into her piano-based tunes.

Based in Liverpool, she performs both independently at her piano, and with her new band, and notes Stevie Wonder, Billie Holiday and Aretha Franklin as some of her main influences.

She will be recording her debut album in the New Year.

Doors open 8pm and entry is £7.

On January 21 Sarah Gillespie, with Gilad Atzmon and Ben Bastin perform (tickets £6 in advance, £7 on the night).

The Greenwich-born singer/songwriter has been hailed by critics as a talent to watch.

A seasoned performer on the London circuit at venues including Ronnie Scotts, Anglo-American songstress Gillespie performs her lyric-driven pieces with a “powerfully sensuous voice and deft finger-picking guitar”.

Her band features internationally renowned jazz sensation and novelist Gilad Atzmon (clarinet, accordion and alto sax), and jazz virtuoso Ben Bastin (double bass).
