Even before the first performance of the 2008 rock ‘n’ roll panto took place at Clwyd Theatr Cymru, it had already broken a record for the Mold venue.
As a reflection of just how popular this annual event has become at the theatre, this year’s production Cinderella – The Panto With Soul has been extended to January 31 – making a total of 91 performances, a new record for the show.
But with ticket sales already having passed the 38,000 mark, it was obvious the venue was going to have another hit on its hands.
Cinderella is a heady cocktail of traditional panto, laced with a string of smash hits – rock ‘n’ roll, soul and pop favourites – all played live by a multi-talented cast of 10 actor/musicians.
A Wicked Stepmother, Ugly Sisters, Prince Charming and a beautiful slipper are the catalyst for lashings of audience participation, a bundle of laughs and a generous helping of slapstick, mixed with all the traditional ingredients that make up the best in festive fun and served up with over twenty classic hits including Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?, It’s Raining Men and Try a Little Tenderness.
The show had its first preview last Friday which saw the culmination of 10 months of hard work by cast members, directors, designers and production managers like Jim Davies, the man charged with the smooth running of the show and making sure everything runs on time and to budget.
“Our pantomimes are hugely popular,” said Jim. “We have a massive fan base and it grows every year as people tell their friends and family.
“One of the main problems we’ve had this year was finding footwear for our ugly sisters.
“We scoured all the transvestite and drag queen shops we could find, but sourcing stilettos for size 13 feet was still a bit of a challenge!”
Director and co-writer Peter Rowe said: “We all got serious cabin fever and we could not wait to finally get out of the rehearsal room and on to the stage.”
The cast has come from all over and includes Daniel Lloyd of Wrexham playing Dandini and James Haggie as Buttons, returning to Clwyd Theatr Cymru after playing Billy Bungalow in last year’s production of Jack and the Beanstalk.
“I’m very pleased with my cast this year,” said Peter, “And I would urge all audience members to shout as loud as they can as this is a show that can take it.”
