Classic Dario Fo satire comes to Liverpool Playhouse

LIVERPOOL favourites Northern Broadsides bring a new translation by Deborah McAndrew of Dario Fo’s satirical masterpiece Accidental Death of an Anarchist to the Liverpool Playhouse from November 4-8.

A brilliant expose of police corruption, this astute political comedy tells the true story of an Italian anarchist who mysteriously fell to his death from the window of a police station.

The ‘Maniac’ investigates, and in doing so reveals the idiocy of lies spun by officialdom.

Conrad Nelson flexes his directorial muscle for the company again following the hugely successful Lisa’s Sex Strike.

Italy’s leading contemporary playwright and Nobel prize winner Dario Fo has himself been arrested, threatened with assassination and put on trial for subversion, all because of his profoundly held left-wing politics and beliefs.

This production will unashamedly celebrate both his theatrical talent and satirical genius.

Northern Broadsides have a unique, direct style in approaching all texts, modern and classic; acclaimed for high energy, dynamic delivery, rooted in the rhythms and cadences of the northern voice.

This is a style which has won the company broad popular support among dedicated theatre-goers and those who would ordinarily never set foot inside a theatre.

Accidental Death of an Anarchist is a play ideally suited to them. The energetic comedy of the original text, translated for their particular northern voice by writer Deborah McAndrew, bristles with sharply observed satire.
