From Morse to miners

MORSE, miners and Manchester School playwrights all feature in the autumn season at Library Theatre Company in Manchester.

The season opens with three performances of Elizabeth and Raleigh - Late But Live, which is expected to be one of the hottest tickets at the Edinburgh Festival.

It is at the Library between September 11-13.

That is followed by The Glee Club by Richard Cameron, which tells the story of five Yorkshire miners in 1962.Directed by the Library’s associate director, Roger Haines, The Glee Club runs between September 19-October 18.

Annie Horniman is celebrated as the founding figure of British repertory theatre, and to mark the centenary of the opening of her Gaiety Theatre on Peter Street, the Library is reviving Independent Means by Stanley Houghton, one of the ‘Manchester School’ playwrights she championed.

Houghton’s feminist comedy runs between Friday October 24 - Saturday November 22.

This year’s Christmas production is an adaptation of Great Expectationswhich runs from Saturday November 29 – Saturday January 17 2009.

Two one-man shows complement the season: Sweet William from distinguished Shakespearean actor Michael Pennington, pictured, (Sunday September 28), and From Books to Box by renowned author Colin Dexter (Sunday November 16).
