Insight into a right royal crisis

FORMIDABLE television actress Patricia Routledge stars in a production of Royce Ryton’s compelling drama, Crown Matrimonial, at The Lowry this week.

The play focuses on the crisis that faced the nation when Edward VIII declared his deep love for Wallis Simpson. Unswayed by the prospect of public scandal, family upheaval and even abdication, he was insistent that he would marry the woman he loved.

Set in Marlborough House in 1936, this unique insight into the domestic life of the Royal family shows the volatile relationship between Queen Mary and her son King Edward VIII.

Known to millions throughout the world as the redoubtable Hyacinth in Keeping Up Appearances and as Hetty in Hetty Wainthrop Investigates, Patricia Routledge is one of Britain’s most distinguished actresses.

The play is on until Saturday. Tickets priced from £12 to £24 are available on 0870 787 5793.
