Jump to it: Big names at Roodee

THE Barclays Wealth British Masters Showjumping event in Chester has attracted some big names in the sport.

At Chester Racecourse over two days – July 31 and August 1 – the cream of British showjumping will be competing for £60,000 in prize money, making this the third biggest event in the UK.

The top 40 riders in the country are signed up, including Whittaker brothers John and Michael, Robert Smith, Ellen and William Whittaker and Fake It TV tutor Tim Stockdale.

Chester Racecourse chief executive Richard Thomas said: “Chester Racecourse is a great venue for the event and we have worked closely with the British Show Jumping Association to inject some funding and prize money into the sport.

“I am excited about the new elements which we will introduce such as matchplay showjumping, with riders competing side by side, betting opportunities, music, live interviews and a dress code which will make this a truly unique event.”

Chester city co-ordinator Stephen Wundke added: “The racecourse is to be commended for attracting a world-class event.

“The focus of Sky TV on Chester would not be possible without the top riders and the racecourse seems to have created a format that is appealing to new audiences and the top riders in our country.

“Another couple of days with an extra 20,000 people in the city is just what we need.”

Tickets are available from £10 and can be bought at www.chester- races.co.uk or from 01244 304600.
