David Nixon’s Olivier-nominated dance version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream returns to the Northern Ballet Theatre (NBT) repertoire this spring, opening at Venue Cymru, Llandudno on Wednesday, June 4.
In NBT’s production, co-directed by Patricia Doyle, the romantic antics of a touring dance company are played out as it travels by sleeper train from London to Edinburgh.
David Nixon’s choreography brings out the comedy, romance and entanglements of this enchanting story.
His Dior inspired costumes, along with stylish black and white sets provide a dazzling contrast to the glorious technicolour of the dreamworld.
Duncan Hayler has returned to NBT to revise the set design allowing NBT to take this production to more venues throughout the UK.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is set to music by Felix Medelssohn and Johannes Brahms, arranged by John Longstaff and performed live by the NBT Orchestra.
Nixon said: “My version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is about young dancers and the passions and tribulations that young people get themselves entangled in. NBT is a company with many young dancers who are going to flourish in this production, so I think it is appropriate to bring it back into the repertoire now.
“The company is technically stronger than when we first created it, so I am looking forward to seeing how it naturally adapts to become a more challenging dance piece.”
