FOUR folk legends for the price of one can be enjoyed at the New Vic Theatre in Newcastle-under-Lyme on Wednesday, May 14.
Together Peggy Seeger, Martin Carthy, Norma Waterson and Mike Waterson are responsible for shaping, creating and inspiring much of the English and North American folk music of the last 50 years.
Peggy Seeger is a member of the North American musical Seeger dynasty which also includes her half-brother Pete Seeger.
Known for her Anglo-American folk songs and for her activist songwriting, Peggy also inspired The FirstTime Ever I Saw Your Face, written by her then partner Ewan MacColl. She has recorded 22 solo albums.
English folk singer and guitarist Martin Carthy has remained one of the most influential figures in British traditional music.
Twice a member of Steeleye Span, he was also in the legendary Albion Band and for many years has enjoyed a creative partnership with fiddle player Dave Swarbrick.
More recently, Waterson Carthy has provided the forum for a successful partnership with partner Norma Waterson together with their daughter Eliza Carthy. He was named Folk Singer of the Year at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2002 and again in 2005. He was awarded the MBE in 1998 for Services to
English Music.
Norma Waterson is a doyenne of British folk music in her own right. Not only did she help form the influential vocal harmony group The Watersons in the 1960s, but in 1996 she received universal acclaim with a nomination for the Mercury Music Prize.
Norma’s brother Mike is one the great interpreters of English song.
