Wonder and magic are what Christmas is all about and Theatre in the Quarter’s new play, which opens tonight, promises even more.
Star of Wonder, written by Helen Newall, directed by Russ Tunney with musical direction by Matt Baker, tells the story of how performers at the Victorian Chester Music Hall are affected by the arrival of a new act – an acclaimed female magician called Isis, the Star of Egypt.
As with all magic, darkness abounds and the young magician on the bill, played by Paul Dabek, is keen to learn all he can from the great Isis.
Russ said: “It’s a bit like Dr Faustus. He is desperate to know more about how she performs her magic and she takes him under her wing.
“He goes so far as to questions whether she really is as magic as the great Egyptian goddess.
“She preys on him and he does a deal with her.
“The young magician goes on to great heights in his career but what sort of price has he had to pay?”
Set in 1899, the play is structured around life in a Victorian music hall with classic illusions.
The set is designed by Emma Cains, who created Forgotten Fortress for Theatre in the Quarter last Christmas, and has to work in a number of venues across Cheshire and Lancashire when the show goes on tour later on this month.
Russ said: “It is a very clever set as it has to work for magic and for pure storytelling.
“The actors have been learning and blending different art forms.
“It’s a lovely show and very theatrical, funny and mysterious.”
Star of Wonder is suitable for all the family.
