University of Chester celebrates learners’ success

Christmas came early for students at the University of Chester’s Learning and Enterprise Centre (LEC) when they celebrated their success in its annual Learners’ Christmas Skills Celebration and Awards Ceremony.

The event recognises and acknowledges the achievements of the Centre’s learning community, and also promotes the services of the Centre to both new and existing learners.

Alison Roberts, Recruitment and Support Officer at the Centre, said: “Many of our learners have overcome personal barriers in order to achieve their personal and professional goals. We hold the Celebration and Awards Ceremony in order to recognise their achievements and to celebrate their successes over the last year.

“Our commitment to widening access to education means that, not only do we support students and other individuals to achieve qualifications and skills in IT, literacy and numeracy, but we also provide the University with a central agency for many of its interactions with businesses and the local community.”

There were both serious and light-hearted awards up for grabs, with Learner of the Month and Learner of the Year being presented, as well as the Lifelong Learner Award. In keeping with the festive and friendly feel of the event, there were prizes for the Mr and Mrs LEC Award and the Determined Diva Award.

The Learner of the Year award was presented Nutchanat Mumsam, while Michelle Johnson was named Learner of the Month. There was a Lifelong Learner award went to Amal Youssef in recognition for her commitment to learning.

Other winners on the day included Kenneth Hewitt, who was given the Accelerated Achiever Award, Dennis Mahar and Claire Pickering, who were awarded the Partnership Prize, and Margery and Reginald Hinett who took the Mr & Mrs LEC prize. The Determined Diva Award was given to Priscilla Roberts.

All of the prizes given out to the winners were kindly sponsored by Tesco and Marks and Spencer.
