Deeside College BTEC National Diploma in Sports Studies student Jasmin Dutton has been selected to represent Wales in the forthcoming UEFA Women’s Under 19 Championship First Round Tournament in Denmark.
The 16 year old former Ysgol Emrys Ap Iwan pupil from Kimmel Bay, will join up with the 18 women squad on Wednesday 16th September 2009 before flying to Copenhagen to take on the Bosnia-Herzegovina and Denmark teams.
Central defender Jasmin, who is a regular in the Tranmere Rovers ladies team and has one senior international cap to her name, is a Sporting Excellence Scholarship student at Deeside College. The Sporting Excellence Scholarship scheme, which is in its fourth year, is aimed at high performing school leavers with an exceptional sporting talent. The scheme rewards the successful candidates with £1,000 per year so that they can concentrate on their studies and their sports activities, without having to get a part-time job.
As a result of the scheme, previous scholarship students have gained representative honours at national and international level with many holding national records and all with their sights firmly set on forthcoming major championships and competitions in their chosen sports. The scheme’s success and the support it provides has resulted in an increase in applications year on year.
Deeside College Principal and Chief Executive David Jones, said: “I would like to congratulate Jasmin on her inclusion in the Under 19s squad and wish her well in Copenhagen. The Sporting Excellence Scholarship scheme has been a huge success since its creation four years ago. We have a fresh intake of outstanding sports men and women this year who I’m sure thanks to the scheme, will excel in their chosen sport as well as in the classroom.”
Jasmin added: “This is the thirteenth time I have been chosen to represent my country at this level. It’s a great honour. I am delighted to have been chosen as a Scholarship Student, the sporting facilities at the Deeside Campus of Deeside College are outstanding and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my first week.”
