Rugby union: Ben Foden left stunned by Heineken Cup final defeat

HEINEKEN HEARTACHE: Ben Foden was left crestfallen after Northampton Saints lost what has been hailed as the greatest final in the history of the Heineken Cup.In spite of a magnificent individual display, the Chester-born England full-back was unable to prevent Leinster from being crowned European champions in the most dramatic fashion on Saturday.Chester RUFC product Foden, 25, produced a superb try-saving tackle on Brian O’Driscoll before scoring an excellent try which helped underdogs Northampton take a seemingly unassailable 22-6 lead into the interval at the Millennium Stadium. But the Irish side were transformed after the break and an unanswered 27-point blitz inspired by Jonathan Sexton ensured they ran out 33-22 winners. It was also an afternoon to forget for Foden’s brother Tom, who was part of the Cheshire team that missed out on a trip to Twickenham after losing their Bill Beaumont Cup semi-final 37-17 to Lancashire.Read
