Rugby union: Helsby seek positives after heavy Port Sunlight defeat

Port Sunlight 60 Helsby 0

A WELL-DRILLED Port Sunlight side condemned Helsby to another heavy defeat in South Lancs/Cheshire Division Three.

Helsby’s Andy Blount was sin-binned for a high tackle in the second half and Sunlight scored 10 tries in all for a comprehensive win.

But despite the scoreline, Helsby had some bright moments via second row Lee Gibson and the side’s man of the match, winger Matt Holey.

Matty Lee also made an immediate impact for Helsby when he was brought on.

Chester 2nds earned a thrilling 38-24 home victory in the Bateman Premier League at home to Fylde 2nds, thanks to a hat-trick from the returning Andy Baston.

Three penalties had given Chester a half-time lead of 9-5, but Fylde led shortly after the break from an unconverted try.

But openside flanker Lewis Griffiths powered his way over for an unconverted try to restore Chester’s advantage.

Baston racked up his tries in a 15-minute purple patch, one of them a 50-metre burst down the wing.

Fellow front row forward prop Matt Thomas popped up in the centre to ghost his way over the line in the final stages, with the boot of fly-half Lloyd Griffiths added three conversions.

Christleton lost 43-17 at Southport 3rds in their University of Salford League Division Four West match.
