Fifth win wets the baby’s head

Christleton 42 St Mary’s Old Boys 19

CLUB captain Chris Lightfoot missed Christleton’s fifth successive Miller League Four West win to attend the premature birth of his son on Saturday morning.

He sent a message to the team to win it for his new son – and they duly obliged.

Christleton stormed ahead when stand-in captain Dave Taylor crossed from close range from the back of a ruck, then Rory Ferguson ran 40 yards to cross between the sticks for his first of four tries.

Will Jones also got on the scoresheet after the St Mary’s fullback made a hash of a high ball, letting it bounce and allowing Jones to catch the ball and cross for a try, with Taylor converting all the kicks.

There was a good debut performance from back rower Ben Teasdale, and Allister Clark did not put a foot wrong at inside centre, both in offence and defence, earning him the man of the match.

Christleton travel to Northwich tomorrow for a 2.30pm kick off.

Lindley 48 Helsby 14: Helsby’scurrent misery continued at Lindley on Saturday.

The team arrived late and, with no time to complete their warm-up, got off to a slow start.

They conceded a try from one of four missed line-outs before the Lindley forwards added another. Further missed tackling then allowed the home side to get their third converted try of the day.

With some quick ball, Helsby were able to get winger Bruce Rigby in at the corner and Kev Ryder converted to go into half time 19-7 down.

Four more Lindley tries followed, each gifted by errors.

With the game out of their grasp, Helsby scored the best try of the day when Phil Arkell set off on a mazy run all the way into the opposition half and scored under the posts. Matt Dumbell added the extras with a drop kick. The home side then scored a final try out wide.

Helsby’s man of the match was skipper Jim Gray. Helsby play Parkonians at home tomorrow.
