Motorsport: Duncan Cameron claims first British GT Championship win of season

DUNCAN Cameron kept his nerve to steer his team to their first victory of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship season.

The 39-year-old, from Chester, held off a thrilling challenge from Gregor Fisken after his co-driver Matt Griffin had opened up a commanding lead at the famous Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium.

Cameron, for whom it was the fifth British GT Championship victory of his racing career, said: “It was fantastic, first win of the season. Let’s hope it’s the first of many.”

In race one Griffin and Cameron narrowly missed out on pole position after a close battle with eventual winners Richard Westbrook and David Ashburn.

The Trackspeed Porsche beat Cameron and Griffin’s MTech Ferrari to the chequered flag by 2.5 seconds after 60 minutes of full on action.

Northamptonshire-based Griffin, 28, was determined to go one better in the second race and, after a cautious start in slippery conditions, he raced into a seven-second advantage over Fiskin in his Trackspeed Porsche.

Slowly but surely Cameron saw that lead whittled down, but he held his nerve to win by just nine-tenths of a second.

Irishman Griffin said: “Duncan jumped in and did an incredible job under a lot of pressure.”
