A CHESTER rower’s first shot at Boat Race glory ended in defeat as Oxford upset the odds.
Mike Thorp was part of the Cambridge crew that lost Saturday’s 157th annual duel between the universities despite being 2/1 favourites to retain their title.
The 20-year-old, rowing in the bow seat, was powerless to prevent Oxford from storming to a four-length victory in 17 minutes and 32 seconds on the River Thames.
Lighter and less experienced, the Dark Blues were not given much hope by the bookmakers.
But the Light Blues were unable to rise to the occasion and Thorp must now wait until next year to get his revenge.
The former Chester King’s School student, who wants to become a barrister, is two years into a three-year degree studying history at Homerton College, Cambridge.
