A CHESTER boxing club member is getting ready for the biggest bout of his life at this year’s Commonwealth Games, writes Oliver Ellis.
Andy Jones, of Saltney-based Deva Police ABC, will compete in the October extravaganza after winning a call-up to the Wales team bound for Delhi.
The 26-year-old’s selection is reward for a glory-laden amateur career that has seen him be crowned the best super heavyweight fighter in Britain as well as winning the Welsh title for the last five years.
Jones said: “I’ve been hoping these last two years for the call. Being Welsh champion for the last five years and winning the British title last year, I’m really pleased.
“The coaches made it clear they wanted fighters that can at least make the quarter-finals, so I’m delighted they feel I can compete.
“I’ve sat down with them and know my training programme – a seven-week regime of fitness work, specific diet and technique work.
“When that’s done I’ll be fighting in a tournament in Beijing in August to warm up for Delhi.”
Jones, from Mold, has faced some tests in his early forays into the international arena, but he is confident he will be in tip-top shape for the big Indian event.
He said: “I think at my last international tournament I was a little naive and under-prepared for the standard I was facing.
“But I’ve had the experience and know what I have to do to improve.
“Through a lot of hard work and training, I’ll be more than ready for the challenge. Heavyweight fighters tend to peak later in their careers, so I believe I am now near the stage where I can be successful and win medals.”
Jones is looking for sponsorship to help fund his training.
