Hockey: Second string steal show as Deeside Ramblers’ 1sts frustrated by bad weather

SNOW forced the postponement of Deeside Ramblers’ North Conference match at the University of Durham on Sunday – but the club’s all-conquering 2nds were in top form again.

Ramblers’ second string, promoted last week with six games of the season remaining, triumphed 3-1 at Didsbury Northern.

Built around the rock-like presence of Stuart Symms, they have proved to be a force to be reckoned with.

The challenge now must be to achieve 100 league goals. They are currently on 91 with a positive goal difference that is twice their nearest rivals.

Hedley Pollard, Dave Cheshire and Mattie Allen netted against Didsbury.

Phil Johnson hit three goals as Ramblers’ free-scoring 3rd team triumphed 5-2 at Morecambe.

The highlight was Phil Winward’s goal, a contender for goal of the season.

It came from approach work by Johnson but the finish into the roof of the net saw the Morecambe keeper seemingly frozen in mid-air as the ball distended the net’s roof.

The other two goals came from Ed Lowe and Kieran Harris. Man-of-the- match was Ed Peel.

A good weekend for the Tiverton club was completed by Ramblers’ 7th team, who beat Chester 4-0.

Warwick Platt (3) and Ian Turley were on target.

Ramblers’ table-topping 1sts host Harborne this Sunday (2pm).
