School sport: Christleton High School students enjoying year to remember
A GIFTED young footballer is setting his sights on winning a professional contract with Premier League giants Liverpool – as a whole host of his Christleton High School colleagues celebrate stunning sporting success.
Tom Walsh has been offered a scholarship with the Anfield giants that will keep him at their famed academy until he is 18.
The 15-year-old will train with Liverpool’s fellow rising stars five days a week from June, at which point he hopes he will be offered full-time terms by the Reds.
Another Christleton student tipped for a future in the game is Stephen Tomassen. The 16-year-old has been offered a scholarship by Wrexham.
Liam Fletcher will represent the school at the English Schools Individual Table Tennis Championships in April. He won the Under 19s age group at the regional final in Runcorn to book his place at the Doncaster event.
Cameron Noyes just missed out on qualifying from the U16s group stage, but Matthew Gilmour and Scott Fletcher did make it through as winners of their groups before they lost in the quarter and semi-finals respectively.
Christleton pupils also specialise in another racket sport, badminton, with their Key Stage 4 team of captain Lucas Roberts, Joe Subert, Ross Palin and Jack O’Reilly storming to Chester & District Cup triumph.
The school’s basketball team, of Callum O’Neill, Cameron Parker, Thomas Hill, Alex Garner, Joe Columbine and Sam Mellor, are also celebrating after they won the Chester & District League by beating Neston High 45-17 in the final.
Christleton’s swimming teams are basking in the glory of their performances at the annual Chester & District Gala.
The Year 8 girls team, of Sophie Fleetwood, Katy Boyce, Jenny Finnerty, Eve Riley, Emma Chaloner, Lydia Ward, Emily-Anne Westoby, Becky Nibbs and Catherine Lau, were crowned champions, as were the Year 9 girls team of Sophie Armstrong, Annie Howarth, Amy Jackson, Emily Kench, Harriet Gifford and Yasmin Dagnell, and the senior boys team, of Jon Armstrong, Jack Fleetwood, Reuben McCormack, Oswald To and Leo McCormack.
Fencing ace Chris Smith won a silver medal at the Cheshire & Wrexham Schools Foil Championships, to add to the bronze he won at the U15s Manchester Open, while Dan Hamp has enjoyed a superb year in cross-country running.
