Kickboxing: Victory for John Henry McNamara in Chester title bout

JOHN Henry McNamara conquered his toughest challenge to date and with it fired a warning to all potential challengers in the Muay Thai world.

The Newtown fighter, part of Dave Newbrook’s Chester branch of the Team Kaobon stable, tackled ISKA English champion Daiton Jackson for the vacant WKA Middleweight crown in front of an excited crowd at Chester Racecourse on Sunday.

McNamara, 18, came from behind to floor his opponent in the third round with a kick to the head.

He then systematically picked off the 21-year-old from Salford, forcing the judges to record a unanimous decision on points.

“It was a really good, all-action show,” said Newbrook. “We couldn’t really call any of the fights before and it showed with some real wars and crowd-pleasing battles and plenty of bruises going around the next day.

“I was really proud of all my lads who all had tough, tough fights where they gave away age, weight and experience.”

Blacon’s Ashley Goodwin secured the Northern area pro-am featherweight title by beating Holywell’s Matt Inskip.

In a tiring fight, Goodwin ground out a unanimous victory over five gruelling rounds.

Ashley’s brother, Danny, made it two wins out of two after taking a points victory over three rounds against tough Shrewsbury fighter Richard Perks.

Steve Vickers, also from Blacon, came back from some punishing body blows early in the first to win each of the three rounds in his bout with Salford’s Andy Logan to also chalk up two wins in two fights.

Tim Bougen just missed out in a points decision which was awarded to opponent Patrick Jarvis of Wrexham over three rounds. Bougen, of Christleton, is already eyeing a rematch for the new year.

Liverpool’s Greg Severs was made to work hard for his victory over Northants’ Colm Gillame in a full Thai rules fight which left both fighters needing stitches from elbow strikes afterwards.

The show is now available to watch for free on www.p4tv.com on their Muay Thai channel titled ‘Young Guns III’.

The next show being planned by Southpaw Promotions is Gladiator School mixed martial arts cage- fighting on February 2 at the racecourse pavilion.
