Hockey: Ramblers hit Wakefield for six

Wakefield 1 Deeside Ramblers 6

IN the bitter West Yorkshire cold Deeside maintained the good form of the warmer months to trounce the home side.

Ramblers played patiently, evenly distributing their goals throughout the game with Wakefield netting their only strike just after half time.

Ghanzafar Ali scored four for the visitors, three of which were from his sublime penalty corner routines. His tenacious fourth was struck home after evading the opposition’s efforts to tackle him.

Ibrar Latif and Ben Lamont scored Deeside’s other goals.

Deeside 2nds almost paid the price for squandering a first half 5-1 lead before coming out 6-5 winners over Timperley at home. Deeside’s Hedley Pollard netted after two minutes before Dell Millard-Smith and Johnny Roger then combined for a second goal.

After 15 minutes Deeside made it 3-0 from a penalty corner, scored by Jack Hardman.

Graham Dick scored from another penalty corner to make it 4-0 and Millard-Smith got the fifth. Timperley pulled a goal back leaving the half time score at 5-1.

From the start of the second half it was more even but Deeside’s Max Ankers gave his side a sixth before the visitors went on a four-goal spree.

Deeside Ladies lost 1-0 despite a great battle on Saturday against league leaders Sheffield. Deeside keeper Nicky Capes made some crucial saves to keep the home side in it and the defenders surrounding her made some good blocking tackles to soak up sustained pressure.

Both sides created clear-cut scoring chances but Sheffield struck the winner in the dying minutes, slotting home a short corner.

As the fog descended, so did the red mist but as tensions ran high Deeside had to accept defeat in a really tight contest.

Deeside Ladies under 15s triumphed 2-1 at home over an Alderley Edge side with many Cheshire and Greater Manchester players.

The game was goalless at half time despite both teams mounting a number of attacks.

Alderley scored soon after the break followed by sustained pressure from Deeside resulting in Natasha Slawson scoring and two minutes before the end, Hattie Butler went on a fine solo run and scored.
