CHESTER Croquet Club suffered back-to-back defeats in the North West Federation League over the weekend.
On Saturday, the club played a full lawn handicap match against Fylde. The Chester team of John Dawson (captain), Dennis Holman, Peter Morgan and Richard Smith won one of the two doubles matches in the morning.
It had looked initially as if Chester might win both matches, but one of the games swung to a Fylde victory in the closing minutes of play.
After lunch, Fylde came out on top in the singles matches winning three of the four games in the afternoon so the overall result was a 4-2 win for Fylde.
On the following day, Chester were beaten in a golf croquet match at Llanfairfechan. The Chester team of Alan Clare, Pat Clare, Val Hughes and Maureen Ivens managed to win only nine of the 22 matches, giving Llanfairfechan a 13-9 victory. The loss ended Chester’s run of four successive wins in the golf croquet league but, with two matches still to play, the club remains a strong title contender.
