Gymnastics: Welsh wonders win team gold in Bulgaria
SALTNEY Gymnastics Club carried Wales to a team triumph in the Bulgaria International.
The club provided seven of the 12 Welsh team members in the competition, which was open to 11-16-year-olds.
Saltney provided a women’s pair, a women’s trio and a mixed pair.
Wales won the overall team event after the scores of the women’s pair, 15-year-old Emily Hanley and 12-year-old Alex Scott, and the trio of Lauren McNeela and Lydia Clarke, both 15, and Amy Scott, 12, were picked out along with one of the South Wales elements of the team as Wales’ three best scores.
They were added together and compared to the best of the rest and Wales came out on top.
Even the pair not selected as top scorers, 15-year-old Chris Groom and 11-year-old Charlotte Allwood, took gold in the mixed pairs section.
Angela Scott, mother of Alex and Amy, said: “It is great for the club to have so many gymnasts having success at international level.
“Wales now has an elite pool of gymnasts from which it chooses competitors for these events.
“Of that 40-strong pool, 23 are from Saltney. It means we are leading the way for Welsh gymnastics.”
Despite this, the club is still on the lookout for sponsorship opportunities.
Anyone interested in sponsoring the club can visit this weekend when the Saltney Classic takes place on Saturday and Sunday from 10am each day. Spectators are welcome at the club, based in Unit Four on the Brymau Estate, and a small entry fee will be charged.
