Bowls: Historic cup attracts huge field

MORE than 70 players entered the 80-year-old Maurice Sharp Cup competition at Hoole Park Bowling Club on Saturday.

Players basked in the warm sun as the open competition got under way.

Two home players Rob O’Shea and Adam Perlington missed out at the semi-final and quarter-final stages respectively, leaving Wrexham’s Carl Pemberton and Hawkesbury’s Paul Roberts to do battle.

At 11-11, the duo were cancelling each other out until Roberts found an extra gear and ran out a worthy winner.

The trophy was presented by Maurice Sharp’s grandson, Gordon Viner, and the proceeds of the day went to Blind Welfare Society.
