Boxing: Chester trio set to be unleashed

UNBEATEN Kevin Buckley will be looking to extend his good start to his professional boxing career when he enters the ring for the Impact Boxing’s “Unleashed” show in three weeks.

Buckley, 21, from Blacon, has won his opening four bouts since signing with the Stoke-based Impact Boxing stable.

Trained by his brother Peter, Buckley’s wins have each been by wide points margins including a victory over Tony McQuade in front of a Sky Sports audience last June at Wolverhampton Civic Hall.

While he has yet to lose a round, never mind a bout, he has also not yet forced a stoppage, but his fledgling career has already attracted some attention within the super-featherweight division.

Also on the bill for the Unleashed show at Stoke Kings Hall on Saturday, March 1 is 18-year-old Great Barrow fighter Chris Goodwin. The welterweight, also in his fifth professional bout, will be looking to extend his three-fight unbeaten record.

Goodwin narrowly missed out on a points decision in his debut bout, but has found Stoke a happy hunting ground, winning each of his three contests in the city.

Finally, Paul Economides, who hails from Connah’s Quay but now trains with Goodwin and Buckley in Chester, will make his debut at the Unleashed show.

Economides, fighting like Buckley at super-featherweight, is 21 and boasts an impressive amateur record, winning three Welsh National titles, a bronze multi-nations medal and winning more than 50% of his bouts, most of which while representing Shotton ABC.

He even fought Buckley three times when they were both amateurs.

Opponents have yet to be finalised for any of the three Chester-based fighters, but negotiations are close to completion.

Coach Peter Buckley said: “I have spoken to the matchmaker and a number of potential opponents have been identified for each of the lads.”

.......................“Although Kevin and Chris are progressing well, they are still fairly inexperienced and need more opportunities to learn the game. They will both step up a level now and I expect them to equip themselves well.”

“Paul has the potential to be a very exciting fighter and will always come to have a go. He is very difficult to deter and just keeps coming forward. I am certain he will put on a good show for his fans.”

Tickets for the March 1 show are £25 (£45 for ringside). They are available from Chester Boxers on 01244 342012 or from www.impactboxing.com

Concessionary tickets are also available for under 14s priced £10.
