Angling: Ron pikes up only fish to win Grosvenor match

RON Evans won by default as he was the only person to catch anything in the Grosvenor Estate AC pike match on Eaton Hall’s serpentine.

On his third cast of the day, he hooked a 4-0-0 pike to a plug bait.

Chester Tackle Locker’s team struggled in the Stapeley, Crewe and District Winter League. Fishing in the Shropshire Union Canal at Market Drayton, they finished joint seventh on the day and remain in sixth overall. John Andrews was their top scorer with 0-15-4 of bits followed by Gordon Griffiths (0-15-0) and Wayne Jevons (0-7-9).

The Heronbrook Fishery Individual Winter League saw Steve Carrier take second in his section with a carp-based 28-2-0, which moved him up to share top spot in the league. Peter Price won his section with carp for 30-4-0 and Phil Henry netted third in his section with 14-8-0.

Terry Nolan won by a long chalk in Sunday’s Lobol AS match on their priory pool. A 4-8-0 carp and 1-0-0 perch helped him make 8-5-0, more than Ian Courtney’s skimmers, weighing 3-9-0, and Peter Cook with 3-7-0.

Despite their three-man team ending up as just a duo following a late withdrawal, Rod n’ Reel put in a creditable performance in the Northwich Winter League fixture on the River Weaver. They delivered their best performance to date to finish fourth on the day but are still 10th in the league, albeit with a smaller gap separating them from the teams above. Tony Jones took 8-14-0 of skimmers, while John Warburton was second in his section with roach and skimmers weighing 5-0-0.

Appalling weather could not stop Dave Woodworth winning the open match at Lingmere Fishery. A carp-based 20-6-0 saw off Geoff Barker with a mixed 8-0-0 and third was shared between Andy Kirk and Bob Evans with 7-0-0.

In Lingmere’s Saturday match, Richard Nelson had a mixed bag weighing 31-7-0 to beat Dave Randles senior with likewise for 26-8-0 ahead of Steve Balson with 14-0-0.

Gary Vincent was top rod in the Tuesday Rovers AC match at Hampton Springs Fishery. An impressive 55-0-0 eclipsed Les Picken’s 27-0-0 and Martin Holding’s 17-4-0 of carp and skimmers.

Vincent also claimed victory in the midweek roving match at Weston Pools Fishery. He won with carp weighing 55-9-0.

Chris Diamond triumphed in the Saturday open mach at Hampton Springs Fishery. A carp-based 29-0-0 saw off Tom Gollins with 12-5-0 and Keith Beam and his 11-10-0 catch.
